Responsible Beverage Service (RBS)
Background
Due to AB1221, which passed in 2021, the training requirements for servers of alcoholic beverage were expanded and renamed to Responsible Beverage Service Training Program (RBS). Any person serving alcohol at any event must be trained in Responsible Beverage Service.
Requirements
UCR Citrus Grove Catering servers are RBS trained. If UCR Citrus Grove Catering is not servicing your event, a minimum of two (2) representatives from the host department must:
Be certified in Responsible Beverage Service
Be present at the event
Be in control of the service of alcohol at all times
Monitoring guests for possible intoxication
Be 21 years-old or older
Refrain from drinking alcohol during the event
If there is not a certified server available, alcohol may not be served. Alcohol may not be left unattended or be self service.
Cost
The total cost of becoming a RBS Trained Server is $18.00
- $3.00 to register with Alcohol Beverage Control
- $15.00 for the online training course
Three Steps to Becoming RBS Certified
Register to get your RBS Server ID in the state's RBS portal.
Prior to taking the RBS Training Course users need to register with the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).
There is a $3.00 Fee to Register
You must have your nine-digit ID Number from your registration with the California ABC to start your course.

Online interactive and self-paced training is accessible on computers, laptops, or mobile devices.
Within 24 hours of completing our course you will receive an email from the ABC with a link to take the ABC exam.
Take the final exam in your RBS account after completing the course
Return to your RBS account after completing the course
You will have three attempts within 30 days of your confirmed training to pass the exam with a 70% or better.
If you do not pass, you will be required to retake training, pay another $3 exam fee, and pass the exam.
Certification is good for 3 years
